is GERD?
Gastroesophageal
reflux disease, commonly referred to as GERD, can be characterized
by repeated bouts of heartburn, sour-tasting fluid in your throat,
and/or difficulty swallowing.

What
causes GERD?
GERD
is caused by acid that escapes from your stomach and travels
backward up your esophagus, sometimes even reaching the throat.
Many foods, beverages, and lifestyle habits can also cause GERD.

How
do I relieve my symptoms of GERD?
You
and your doctor can discuss the many lifestyle changes and medical
options involved in the treatment of GERD.
Some
options available to you include:
- Raise
the head of your bed to avoid reflux at night
- Avoid
food close to bedtime
- Decrease
alcohol and caffeine intake
- Stop
smoking
