What is an ulcer?

An ulcer is a sore or hole in the lining of the stomach. Similar to other sores, the top layer of tissue is gone, exposing more sensitive tissues underneath.

What causes ulcers?

There are many theories as to what causes ulcers. Some theories include:

  • Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium found in the lining of the stomach
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen
  • Smoking
  • Excess stomach acid
  • Certain foods and beverages

How can I relieve my symptoms?

  • Avoid particular foods and beverages, such as orange juice, coffee, cola, and alcohol
  • Stop smoking
  • Limit use of medications, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen

If you feel that you may be suffering from an ulcer, contact your doctor. Your doctor will evaluate your symptoms and possibly perform diagnostic tests to determine if you are suffering from an ulcer. Your doctor may be able to prescribe medication to prevent further erosion and even completely heal your ulcer.
